Grain Calculator
Cleaning calculator for small conical snails
Stirling to Coast Farmers has worked with farm advisor Rod Grieve to build an online calculator that will estimate the cost of cleaning small conical snails out of barley and canola.
The calculator estimates the cost in $/t based on the price and tonnage of grain being cleaned, compares grower managed grain cleaning with using a contractor, and considers the cost of grain losses or changes in quality due to cleaning. We have set default values throughout the calculator, but you can enter your own data to customise the calculations to your own business.
START by clicking on ‘SELECT GRAIN’ from the drop-down menu, and select canola or barley, and then enter the tonnes to be cleaned and the current price per tonne. You can leave it at that, and press ‘CALCULATE’ to determine the cost per tonne for the four cleaning methods shown at the bottom of the page; a grower owned and operated Double or Single Snail Roller and Rotary Grain Cleaner or hiring a Contractor.
Or you can click on ‘EDIT OPTIONS’ to customise your own grain data. This includes oil % and admix for canola, or prices for other grades and the chance of getting malt for barley. Just remember to click ‘CALCULATE’ after any changes.
You can also customise the cleaning method by clicking on ‘SELECT METHOD TO EDIT’ and choosing the method you are interested in. This will allow you to change settings such as the machinery capital cost or capacity in t/hr for the snail rollers and cleaner or set the price per tonne and estimate losses for contract grain cleaning.
Once you are happy with your own edits you can click ‘CALCULATE’ to determine the new cost/tonne for each cleaning method.
Click the ‘REFRESH’ button on your browser to reset all values back to the original defaults.
